Yes, MBOX is limited to 2GB.  This is well known and frequently
reported.

Yes

1.) don't use MBOX.
2.) Upgrade to an Evolution built with largefile support
3.) Use an IMAP server as your persistent mail store.

Create a maildir mailbox and copy the mail to it.
