You'd be better off ignoring Evolution's Network Preferences and
sticking with the desktop-wide proxy settings (usually System ->
Preferences -> Network Proxy).

Evo's proxy settings don't really work right, they never have, and now
that GNOME has proxy support built right into its core I/O library, I
plan to remove those preferences in the not-too-distant future.
