Just to close this off.

The duplicated folders have 'disappeared' - so everything is working
fine again.
I haven't done anything more than what was said in this thread. The only
thing I can put it down to is that I usually hibernate the laptop
overnight, but yesterday I shut the laptop down completely and rebooted.
SO maybe some 'temporary' file was cleared?
