Two questions: 1) are you running NetworkManager? 2) are you sure Evo knows it's online? What does the connection icon (lower-left corner) look like? It should be closed. If it's open, Evo thinks it's offline (even when it's actually online). This happens when you are using NM but haven't configured it to manage your network interface, so NM tells Evo that it's offline. This "feature" affects several other Gnome apps as well. Right-click on your desktop's nm-applet icon and select Edit Connections to check or change this.
