That last - force-shutdown etc. seems to have done it. Something I'd never have worked out for myself given my state of Linux-savvy at the moment! I did as you suggested, then zipped the user/.evolution directory, copied it to the other machine, unzipped it in that one's home/user directory and Evo launched perfectly.
