Log out of your desktop session so that you're back on the GDM login screen. Then press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to a full screen terminal. Login and do the "gconftool-2 --shutdown", etc. from there. When you're importing, log out of your full screen terminal and switch back to GDM by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F7.
