I've just been speaking with people in #evolution channel and bhareth suggested I post this to the list.
I debugged what was happening, and basically, despite the fact that evolution is importing the certs from the smart card, the OWA portion is behaving just like OWA behaves when the smart card is not present in the card reader... generating a 401 error...
