Pat,
May be you have selected "Never load images" option from
preferences.To change preferences Go to Edit > Preferences > Mail
preferences > HTML mail tab.Here you can choose load image options among
1) never load image
2) load images with valid contacts
3) always load images
And below that you have one more option "Plan text mode" in which you
can choose format which ever you want either HTML or Plain.
Hope this will solve your problem.
