I posted this a while ago on this list. You can get mail-notification to work with a simple patch if you're happy to compile it from source. I have it working with 2.6 quite nicely. The patch was here (http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/garnome/geektoys/mail-notification/files/), called mail-notification-2.0-evolution-2.6.diff however I notice now there is a mail-notification-2.0-evolution-2.8.diff instead. It may or may not work for 2.6, I haven't tried it.
