This was some issue with gtkhtml that has been fixed in the the 2.4
cycle. Upgrading gtkhtml and evolution, that should surely solve this
issue, and similar such issues w.r.t editing/composing/rendering of
mails using gtkhtml.

Like you said it yourself, this actually is not an Evolution issue. A
connection timeout issue obviously. There is nothing much as is we can
do in evolution. I have sent mails which are in MB have never faced a
timeout issue from my SMTP server. Connection Timeout is too generic an
error to actually suggest anything. 
Am not sure what caused this problem though.
