This happened to me a few times a while ago as well... my hypothesis
from the few emails i got were that some HTML messages seem to stuff
around the character encoding. 

When you have this problem, in the reply window, go to "Edit" =>
"Character Encoding" ... you will most likely find that its set to
something weird. From memory, changing it to Unicode fixes the problem.
