Well, logging out of X and doing the maintenance work in a virtual terminal might be a solution for you -- but it is in no way an option for the average user, unfortunately. Granted, neither is the need to 'kill' a process. But this is considered a bug anyway, and will be fixed. The [force-]shutdown options are, although they can be hard for users, too. Better solutions are being hacked on. In general, it should be easy for a user to get all this data and settings back.
