On one machine I just reinstalled 2.4.2 and it seems to have fixed
itself.

On the other machine I noticed there were evo-2.2 processes lying around
(e-d-s and evolution-alarm-notify). I suspect they were started by some
other process that thinks 2.2 is my version of Evo (possibly Firefox).
Anyway, I killed them and now everything seems back to normal.

I'll post new info if anything breaks again, but for now it looks like
it's not worth bothering about.
