which does not at all answer andrew's question about the "how". :-( generally, the shell commands need love, e.g. they only work for the primary addressbook, and "evolution-addressbook-clean" has been *totally* unusable since version 2.0 (see the patch [hint, hint!] at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=307513#c3).
