I had seen a similar problem, when evolution was not able to fetch a particular mail from the server, and thus failing to fetch anything after it in the queue. [ I had seen this behaviour in 1.4 then ] I had to manually remove that offending mail [ all by trial and error and using various mail clients to fetch the mails ].
