*New discoveries have been made by computers in science and mathematics before, but they have all been from narrow specialized programs such as AlphaFold and AlphaTensor, but Google's new AlphaEvolve can work on any problem where there is an easy and objective way to check how well it's doing. So it won't help much in improving an AI's creative writing skill or in its ability to philosophize, but it will help a lot in improving its mathematical ability, in writing computer code that is fast and resource stingy, and in managing finite resources for maximum output. I was not the only one who was amazed by this new development, this is what the journal Nature had to say about AlphaEvolve yesterday:*
