Hello John, thank you for letting me know that voip.ms has that feature, I didn't see that when I was searching for options earlier.
I found this setup document https://wiki.voip.ms/article/SMS#Email_to_SMS And it looks like it is a little less of a drop in replacement because they require the recipient phone number be set as the subject of the email, and the message is sent to a static email address. Nothing that is hard to change but it would require the sms AT templates be updated. The voip.ms pricing is very enticing, thanks for pointing that out.
