Tesla has a recall for failing and failed eMMC chips on the 2012-2018 Model S/X cars with the older MCUs (MCU1). They replace the 8 GB eMMC with a larger eMMC (64 GB at present, I think). There is no charge to the customer for this. Expect the trip meters to be reset. The larger eMMC should have much longer life due to more available capacity for write leveling.
As for prevention: avoid things that incur extra writes. That might mean skipping/not installing optional updates. If one has root, that could also mean turning off logging. Streaming music also incurs writes as it buffers locally to avoid interruptions during gaps in cell network coverage.
