Sure, leaf modules work fine, if you can find them. You'll need to have ten modules, two in parallel and five pairs in series to allow for the current that an ET running an implement can draw while mowing/etc.
All ten modules can be placed in the front battery compartment if you lose the factory ferro-resonant charger and cut down the toaster cage. Charging can be done through the always-on accessory receptacle. I left the four lead 6v batteries in the rear compartment as a traction enhancement and to run the implement lifts and lights.
Performance with these modules is quite satisfactory, better than any fresh lead-acid batteries I ever ran, even while still using the original controller.
