ICE cars essentially have "free" heat, since about 70% of the fuel ends up
as waste heat.   EVs are too efficient, so no appreciable waste heat, so
all the heat has to come from the battery.   The way to "cheat" is to
pre-condition the car before you depart while the car is still plugged into
the grid.   Having a heat pump like the later Nissan Leaf and all Teslas
made in the last few years is also very helpful.
