Many in WA oppose gas-car ban, poll shows — but electric vehicle demand is high

Brian Kelly, a Volkswagen electric vehicle specialist, fields over 20 requests a month from people looking to take a test drive. And over 300 people are waiting for their new cars to be delivered to the Seattle lot.
...
“The biggest negative to people has been the wait,” Kelly said. Customers have been waiting up to 15 months for an electric car from Germany. Now that production has moved to Chattanooga, the wait time could be cut in half.
...
So far, fully electric vehicles have made up an average of 6% of new vehicle registrations each month in Washington, according to the state Department of Licensing.
...
But according to a recent poll, Washingtonians may have mixed feelings about what Gov. Jay Inslee called a “critical milestone” in the climate change fight: a statewide ban on the sale of new gas cars by 2035.
...
Just less than half of respondents, 48%, said they do not support the proposed ban, while 38% support it and 16% were unsure about it. Results suggest opinions fall along party lines.
...
Last year, Seattle-based alternative energy nonprofit Coltura found that about 60% of respondents supported a policy to “require all new cars to be electric by 2030.” About 34% of respondents opposed the policy.

And a handful of reader comments (My opinion: it doesn't matter if these people are right or wrong, but it shows their sentiment.):

How many of the people who oppose the ban are likely to even be alive in 2035? I’ll bet a large majority of folks who will be still be driving and buying cars by then support it.

...

When they can figure out how to charge one as fast as you can fill up a tank of gas, then they have a solution

...

I’m not completely convinced that a small economy gas powered car is less environmental than a large heavy Luxury EV.

...

The lack of a good DC fast charging network is probably the weak link for every brand except Tesla. This is getting solved pretty quickly now. In Europe this is largely solved. I suspect it will be solved in the US by 2030.

...

Our second electric car is on order, and when it arrives we will be 100% gasoline free. Our first was a humble Leaf bought used 5 years ago & it was amazing. That said, I believe an all-out ban of IC vehicles is inappropriate. If carbon emission is the target, it should be taxed appropriately, leaving the market to sort out where it still makes sense to incur that extra cost.

...

So what’s the plan then? We need change! It is no wonder that the younger people support it. They are the ones who are going to be impacted the most by climate change.
