I've found that the Leaf main pack holds charge quite well, at least on
early Gen 1, even if left disconnected from an EVSE for an extended period
of time.

There do not appear to be vampire losses that are able to discharge the
main pack when the car is off. They can only discharge the 12v. The car
does not automatically recharge the 12v using the main pack. A dead 12v on
a Leaf is an inconvenience, but it's pretty easy to use the emergency key
built into the fob to get into the car, and then later apply a small jump
pack to wake the Leaf back up (so that the DC/DC will charge the 12v).
(Note: there are some caveats with using DCFC on at least some Leaf years
in the sense that you can deplete the 12v after the DCFC completes, because
the DC/DC shuts off upon DCFC completion.)

This is unlike on a Tesla Model S and newer, where the 12v is monitored by
the car. Then, as needed, the 12v is regularly topped off by the DC/DC
converter running off the main pack, which in turn will discharge the main
pack down to 5% or so before the car leaves the 12v to die. The remaining
capacity on the Tesla main pack is reserved for driving to the nearest
charger and for bricking prevention.

Bricking protection didn't exist on the original Tesla Roadster; leaving
one of those away from charging too long could ruin the pack.

A Tesla with a dead 12v battery is trickier to get going than a Leaf,
starting out with there being no physical key to unlock the car. The exact
recovery procedure varies by vehicle model and year.
