I'm not an expert, but when I looked into splits for my home about 8 years ago, I read that the charge did indeed have to be adjusted for different line lengths. At the time there were Chinese-made splits meant for DIY installation that had quick-connect lineset couplings. (These proved to be unreliable.) You had to coil up the excess lineset length somewhere. I suppose that you could do that with a conventional compression fitting lineset and avoid changing the factory charge level. However it's a moot point, since by EPA regulations only a licensed HVAC tech is allowed to handle refrigerant connections. This being a public forum, I can't condone violating the law. You could theoretically do the dirty installation work yourself and hire a pro for the final lineset connection and charging. Good luck finding one willing to do it though. I have heard of DIYers doing so, but that was back when work for HVAC installers was slower. To make this on-topic, I've wondered whether a mini-split heat pump could be adapted for an EV conversion. They're usually 240v so their inverters might be able to accept input from some of the higher voltage EV batteries. I've heard of people using certain kinds of window aircon units that way. The physical dimensions (width) of the evaporators in splits might be a problem in an EV conversion, however.
