Our local People's Utility District has been offering free charging
from two 30 amp EVSE parking stations at their offices for a couple
of years now, and touting them in their monthly newsletter that gets
sent out with bills.
They've now decided to remove the free pedestals and replace them
with Chargepoint stations because they "Don't want to complete with
the Casino", which has a few chargers in their parking lot.
I told them that they weren't competing by giving away a few free
miles to EV drivers, but now that they are charging for charging,
they are. I also suggested that they put in a few slot machines to
maximize profit.
This isn't happening because the EVSE was overly busy, I seldom see
them being used at all, but because it's not "appropriate" for them
to not charge for services, similar to streetlights, security
lighting, etc. I've used the stations perhaps half a dozen times when
I was doing errands in that part of town, not because I needed to,
but because they were there and it seemed to interest the employees
in the office to see them getting used.
I shared my feelings with them and suggested that they pass them
along to the Board of Directors.
