This is pretty poor writing, not what I would have expected from Wired. I don't know about "boost[ing] the energy by five times," but the "six times greater" volume is bogus. That phrase, "times greater," should be banned from every writer's vocabulary because 99.9% of them confuse it with (and use it interchangeably with) "six times as much." They do NOT mean the same thing. Some of us learned that in grade school, but I'm a codger, and education sucks now, so no wonder this writer, Daniel Oberhaus, is both mathematically and linguistically ignorant. For the record, "six times more" == "seven times as much." In this case, fortunately, Oberhaus gave us the data we need to figure the volume ourselves. He wrote that the new cells are 4608s and the old ones are 2170s. Neglecting the casing dimensions, the 4680s are 5.5 times the volume of the 2170s. Unless you're doing stupidly aggressive rounding, that isn't either 6 times as much or 6 times more, and it sure isn't what he wrote, but I give up. All I know for sure from reading this piece is that Tesla is moving from 2170s to 4680s. The rest of it is garbage. Bin it.
