This seems like a good place to insert one of my anecdotes....
~10 years ago we had a Texas Representative from Houston (to the Texas
State Legislature in Austin). He was using a pickup truck as a
passenger car in his commuting to/from Austin. About 150 miles. VERY
typical use in Texas. A tricked out, high clearance, 4wd, four door,
3/4 ton. Probably very rarely put to proper use of hauling stuff. He
died in a one car roll over on US290 about 50 miles short of Austin. A
situation he would almost certainly have survived or avoided in a more
reasonable passenger hauler. He almost certainly believed he was
driving a safer vehicle than the other users of that highway. It always
stuck in my craw that he was participating in making our laws.
I'm VERY proud of many things Texas. Some things, not so much.
Before EVs were practical, I was a BIG fan of 1981-1986 Isuzu pickups. I
put hundreds of thousands of miles on the several I owned. Typically,
they gave me at least 35 mpg, commonly 40 mpg, more rarely 50 mpg. They
hauled as much as the "1/2 ton" US made competitors, nearly as much as
"3/4 ton". With the reasonable size and height, you can reach any point
in the bed while standing flat footed on the ground. Alas! After 1986,
no reasonable size new pickups were available in this country.
My favorite pickup was my 1974 Datsun. A tiny pickup with a full-size
bed, got 34 mpg, and had almost a 3/4 ton load capacity. I converted it
into my first EV!
