When a Leaf dealership replaces a 2011-2012 battery with a gen2 battery,
there is an extra "adapter cable kit" they use that allows the gen2
battery to work in a gen1 vehicle. [Plus, they reprogram the computer to
work with the new battery (or perhaps, reprogram the battery to work
with the new car?)]
If you are trying to do the upgrade yourself, the low-tech solution is
to open up both batteries and swap out the modules (only) from the new
battery into the old battery (keeping the old battery shell, connectors,
and BMS system), so that no re-programming of the computer is needed.
(I have also heard of some people who have built a "man in the middle"
box that will sit between a Leaf and a new battery and modify the can
bus traffic so that the computer doesn't need to be re-programmed....)
