Bruce, you evaluate the Texas situation well. I decided that Austin was doomed 40 years ago and moved 40 miles away from the directions of growth. My fears have been well proven. One of the joys of my life is touring "poorly" developed area in Texas and other states. The growth is happening everywhere. The "development" is unstoppable short of a population collapse.
Tesla is having trouble filling it's labor needs in Sparks/Reno so I doubt that they will select a very remote area of Texas. I'm willing to not complain if Tesla decides to further degrade the already hopeless and ruined Austin area. As long as they don't come my direction. I wonder if the San Antonio Toyota plant is big enough for Tesla? I expect hard times to soon come to Toyota. Probably not soon enough, though.
BTW, I consider the hill country west of IH35 to be quite beautiful and attractive. George Bush had his Texas Whitehouse in Crawford. You don't hear much of Crawford any more. I wonder if it became Bush's retirement home as was intended?
Former governor Rick Perry is from Paint Rock, not far from San Angelo. Paint Rock is a beautiful but bedraggled old small county seat in need of some TLC. I recently became aware that Perry is developing his retirement home in the Brenham area. Round Top. A beautiful area, steeped in Texas History, that is suffering from proximity to Houston money.
I can think of dozens of cheap land areas in Texas, some close to a good labor supply, that Tesla may find attractive. I will not be suggesting them.
A few weeks ago, I toured down to The Valley to observe Boca Chica. I have a blog post on the trip.
