I got a ride in Rod Wilde's 1990 Land Rover EV conversion. It was
certainly a competent off-road vehicle. Also lots of fun! :-)
Now, the Land Rover is a vehicle specifically built for off-road use. It
wasn't the cushy new ones that are more car than truck. As an EV, the
electric motor's very high torque and very low speed capabilities made
it a great rock-climber. No pollution and no noise also made it kind to
the environment; a great contrast to the roaring, smoking,
wheel-spinning contraptions that you often see tearing up the woods.
An EV like this could really work. So could a military-style Hummvee EV.
But I doubt that's what GM plans to make. :-(
