Porsche Taycan’s Terrible EPA Electric Range Makes It the Least Efficient EV

Porsche is not happy with the EPA's result, so it hired its own team to get
a better "real-world" range number.

EPA ratings show that the 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo electric car achieves an
estimated driving range of 201 miles and gets 69 MPGe combined.

As first reported by Jalopnik, Porsche paid a testing agency called AMCI to
run its own numbers, which resulted in a "real-world" range of 275 miles.

We look forward to testing the Taycan's range ourselves to see what we get.

Porsche's new Taycan electric vehicle is the least efficient EV ever,
according to the EPA. Its 69 MPGe combined efficiency figure is low for a
modern EV, as is its rated range of 201 miles on a single charge. Even the
decades-old GM EV1 was more efficient, rated at a combined 85 MPGe.

As you might guess, Porsche isn't thrilled with the EPA's numbers. It hired
testing agency AMCI to conduct its own tests of the Taycan, which resulted
in an observed range of 275 miles in combined driving. In Europe's Worldwide
Harmonized Light Vehicle Testing Procedure (WLTP) testing, the Taycan Turbo
is rated at 280 miles of range ...

All these numbers are for the Taycan Turbo model, which has a 93.6-kWh
battery pack and front- and rear-mounted electric motors that produce a
combined 670 horsepower. We previously estimated that the Taycan Turbo's EPA
range would land around 270 miles. There is also a more powerful Turbo S
model, which will likely offer even less range (we previously estimated it
at around 225 miles), and a less powerful 4S model, which will likely offer
slightly more range.

What's curious is that Porsche says that these EPA numbers are merely
confirmation of the numbers that the automaker itself submitted to the
agency, as is typical practice. And Porsche spokesperson Calvin Kim said
that Porsche is not "rebutting" the EPA numbers. The AMCI test, then,
appears to be Porsche taking issue with the EPA's range testing cycle
itself.

We look forward to testing a Taycan for ourselves to see what kind of range
the Taycan gets in our hands. Our test is a 75-mph highway range test, which
means it does not correspond directly to the EPA's range test, which is a
combined cycle. Like the Audi e-tron, which also has a low EPA range rating,
we might find that the Taycan's highway number is closer to the EPA-rated
range than you might expect.
