Move comes three years earlier than original plan.

Honda’s Tom Gardner says the company is accelerating its plans to sell only
electrified cars in Europe by three years from 2025 to 2022.

Honda Motor Europe is following its recent announcement to end diesel
vehicle sales by revising its plan to sell only electric and hybrid cars in
Europe in the next few years.

The Japanese automaker made noise earlier this year when officials said they
planned to shift European sales to be all electric by 2025, but the
Wednesday revelation accelerates that timeframe to 2022. Diesel sales will
end in 2021.

“By 2022 we are confident we can have the full range electrified and
actually deliver something quite extraordinary,” Tom Gardner, senior vice
president at Honda Motor Europe, said during an event in Amsterdam,
according to Reuters.

Honda took the covers off its new hybrid-electric Jazz, which is produced
for the European market. Honda also revealed its new ‘e: Technology’
branding, which will unify all electrified products from across the business
under the same global name.

The new Honda Jazz features the automaker’s hybrid engine. It’s part of the
company’s plan to introduce six new electrified vehicles by 2022.

“We see a big change happening in Europe and today we are announcing our
response to that,” he said.

“We can also feel the fact that the market around us is expanding. Obviously
the legislation around the environment is getting clearer as well. It is the
track we are on in terms of the development of the new fully electrified
line-up.”

The company’s autos get new names to reflect the move to a more
environmentally friendly portfolio. The badging will denote the type of
powertrain; Jazz will be the first vehicle to carry the “e:HEV” branding,
standing for “Hybrid Electric Vehicle.”

In the case of the Jazz, the hybrid set up is a little different. Typically,
a small motor charges the battery that runs the car; however, that’s
reversed in the Jazz. The result is immediate acceleration of an electric
vehicle matched to Honda’s unique control technology — offering outstanding
environmental performance without compromising driver enjoyment, officials
note.

Honda have also confirmed how it will reach this ambition. Including the
all-new Jazz and Honda e, six electrified models will be launched for the
European market in the next 36 months. This includes a further battery
electric vehicle ...

“This shift to electrification will change the face of our model line-up
considerably,” Gardner said. “Our two-motor hybrid technology will be spread
across the model range and we will bring further battery electric product to
the market.”

The Jazz, which arrives early next year, is joined by the already available
Honda e, a small battery-electric city car.

The European Union is implementing new mandates next year to reduce carbon
dioxide vehicle emissions from. Automakers are scrambling to meet the new
benchmarks and avoid heavy fines and an influx of new electric vehicles is
part of that strategy.
