The electric Mini Cooper SE is already proving popular

The 2020 Mini Cooper SE has had a promising response from the buying public,
with the BMW subsidiary reporting more than 45,000 expressions of interest
for its first series production electric vehicle.

Speaking with German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, project
manager for the electric Mini, Elena Eder, said the company's decision to
allow prospective buyers to secure a build slot with a small down payment
"works", drawing upon the model implemented by Tesla.

"So far, we already have over 45,000 registered prospects," Eder told the
publication.

Production of the Mini Cooper SE is scheduled to commence in Oxford, UK, on
November 1 – ironically the same day Great Britain is expected to leave the
European Union.

Eder said the company "ready for any eventuality" that occurs as a result of
Brexit.

"It does not affect us, it has meanwhile been talked about for so long that
we are prepared for all eventualities," she said.

The Mini Cooper SE is powered by a 135kW/270Nm electric motor mounted on the
front axle, claiming a 0-100 sprint time of 7.3 seconds on its way to a top
speed of 150km/h.

With its 32.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the electric Mini claims a
driving range of 235-270 kilometres per charge, with 50kW fast-charging able
to replenish 80 per cent of the power pack's capacity in 35 minutes.

Pricing for the Cooper SE starts at £24,400 ($43,326) in the UK, with
deliveries scheduled to commence in March 2020.

For now, it seems like Australia will have to wait – the local division is
unable to confirm availability for our market at this stage.
