Great Wall has revealed it will soon offer an all-electric ute - and the
company’s local arm wants it to come to Australia.

Aside from claiming an impressive 500km range, Great Wall is staying quiet
on the specifics of electric ute, which would be the first of its kind sold
in Australia.

It’d be a brave move given Australians haven’t shown a fondness for Chinese
or electric vehicles in the past, however Great Wall Australia is keen as it
believes local buyers are “ready for a paradigm shift”.

The brand has also offered a first glimpse of rugged, outdoorsy version of
the ute which will definitely make it to our shores next year.

Simply referred to as the “adventure ute” at this stage, it seems aimed at
the likes of the Toyota HiLux Rugged X, packing LED headlights and tail
lights, carbon black wheel arches, extended sports bar, a specially designed
tailgate for offroad bike enthusiasts, built-in front winch, triple diff
locks, a 7-setting All Terrain Control System, and a 900mm fording depth.

It will sit on the same platform as the all-new Haval H9, with both vehicles
to be made at the company’s new AUD$1 Billion Chongqing plant.

Its home market will have the choice of long or short wheelbase dual cabs,
and a single cab and the aforementioned off-road model.

Australia will also definitely get a more “urban-based” ute, which is
expected to be the volume seller ...

Great Wall Australia says the utes will most likely replace the Steed,
depending on pricing.

The brand will have high hopes for the new ute, given the Steed took some of
the gloss off Great Wall’s return to Australia as a factory-backed
organisation when it achieved a two-star ANCAP crash safety rating - the
same as the V240 it was replacing.

West Wheels will be heading to China this month for a closer look, so stay
tuned for more details.
