At least two of the suspects claimed to have the vehicles because they are part of the Tesla family. Of course, the electric vehicle manufacturer’s moniker isn’t a family name, but rather homage to inventor Nikola Tesla. According to jail records, a UHP trooper noticed a man in a Tesla pull up behind him and act suspicious. The trooper motioned for the vehicle to pull over. The man driving the Tesla explained that a man he hardly knew gave him a Tesla and keys to three other Teslas. Not believing the story, the trooper impounded the vehicle and asked the 24-year-old man to accompany him to the showroom, which was found to have been burglarized. The suspect told the trooper that when he showed up to the showroom earlier it had already been burglarized and there was an alarm sounding. Since police were not there yet, he said he felt he was allowed to take the vehicle and the keys. The man also was found to be in possession of the business license for the dealership, a certificate of commerce, and a check made out to Tesla for $49,500 with the suspect’s name endorsed on the back. South Salt Lake Police spokesman Gary Keller said officers in the area were told to be on the lookout for the flashy cars, which resulted in two more arrests. A 31-year-old man was arrested following a chase when a trooper spotted a Tesla and started to follow. The chase was short lived, Keller said, as the battery in the allegedly stolen vehicle died. And a 19-year-old man was pulled over and arrested in West Valley while driving a 2017 Tesla S with a friend, Keller said. The man told police he had entered the showroom earlier with two other men, according to jail records. “We are still trying to sort this out,” Keller said. “We actually have two people claiming their name is Tesla and a family member died and left them these cars.” Keller said. Two of the suspects had to be fingerprinted to determine their actual identities. All three were booked into jail. Everything stolen from the dealership appeared to have been recovered until a Salt Lake City police officer pulled over a Tesla early Friday afternoon and realized it was stolen. Keller said the 27-year-old woman was arrested outside of a liquor store on 1255 W. North Temple. She told police a man named Tesla had given her the car. Keller said he doesn’t think there are more stolen cars driving around, but he isn’t positive. Keller said the showroom was accessed with a key, so police are looking for a possibly connected home or vehicle burglary. “It’s one of those cases where you just have to scratch your head and say, ‘Really?’ ” Keller said. According to a probable cause statement, the investigation began after a Utah Highway Patrol trooper saw a vehicle “acting suspicious” and motioned for it to pull over. Smith then told the trooper he had been at the dealership, he heard an alarm sounding and had seen that the dealership had been ransacked, the probable cause statement said. “(Smith) then took the keys and a vehicle. He felt it was allowed because the police hadn’t shown up yet,” the probable cause statement said. “(Smith) had in his possession the business license to the dealership, certificate of commerce, and a check written to Tesla for $49,500 with his name as the endorsement on the back of the check.” South Salt Lake Police also responded to the dealership, and officers said they saw a stolen Tesla drive past as they were investigating the incident. Later Friday morning, police said they found Zachary Jason Hallman in possession of a stolen 2017 Tesla S near 3100 S Redwood Rd. in West Valley City. “The management at Tesla did not know Zachary and did not give him permission to be in possession of their stolen vehicle,” a statement of probable cause said. UHP officials told FOX 13 they were able to catch up with one of the stolen cars near 2100 S and 200 W because its battery died. William Weist, 31, Shane Smith, 24, Zachary Hallman, 19, and Earlene Parker, 27, were all arrested in connection to an apparent burglary and theft of the vehicles at a Tesla dealership located at 2312 S. State, according to South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller. “One guy claimed a family member had died and left them all this stuff, but two of them actually said (it was given to them) by (a man named) Tesla,” Keller said. Each vehicle, Keller said, was worth about $80,000. The bizarre chain of events began around 1 a.m. when a Utah Highway Patrol trooper conducting a traffic stop near the Tesla dealership noticed a Tesla passenger car stop behind the trooper’s squad car. The trooper, believing the man driving the car wasn’t the owner of the vehicle, called for another officer while he conducted his traffic stop and a South Salt Lake police officer arrived at the scene to investigate, Keller said. Keller said the man, identified as Smith, had a bag of keys and told police he had come to return the vehicle. “I don’t know if he had a guilt complex or whatever, but he claimed his name was Tesla and once (police) started talking to him, he didn’t want to talk to police; he wanted an attorney,” Keller said. The incident caused police to begin investigating a possible burglary at the dealership. As officers were investigating, they spotted a second Tesla drive by the building, Keller said. Another UHP trooper pulled the vehicle over several blocks away, after the vehicle ran out of battery power, and arrested Weist. Smith told police “a guy he hardly knew gave him a free Tesla along with three other keys to other Teslas,” according to a jail report. In addition, he said the man gave him keys to the building. Smith added that he was at the dealership when the building alarm sounded for about 20 to 30 minutes and saw the building being ransacked, the report stated. The report added that Smith then took the keys to the vehicle and had a business license to the dealership, a certificate of commerce, and a $49,500 check written to Tesla in his possession. Weist identified himself as "Carlos Romero" and officers found a financial transaction card with that name in his pocket, according to a jail report. Police then called Tesla and were able to identify multiple stolen items from the business in his possession, the report said. Police were able to positively identify the man at Weist through fingerprints. Two other vehicles were recovered later in the morning. One of the vehicles was pulled over by West Valley City police, and another spotted outside a liquor store in Salt Lake City, according to Keller. Hallman and Parker, the drivers of those vehicles, each told police a man named “Tesla” gave them the vehicles they were driving. Hallman told police he had entered the dealership with two other men and had taken the vehicle, according to the report. A jail report was unavailable for Parker. Keller said he believes police have recovered all of the vehicles stolen from the dealership, but added there could be more. In the meantime, he said investigators are unsure how one or more individuals were able to get into the building and take the vehicles. “Somehow the doors were not pried or broken open,” he said. “We believe they went into the building with keys or possibly the doors were open. We don’t know at this time.” Police were also trying to figure out how all four individuals were connected Friday, Keller said. “It’s one of those cases where you’re going, ‘What?’ and you’re scratching your head," he said. Gary Keller, South Salt Lake Police Department. “It appears they got in with keys. Two individuals claimed a family member died and left them all these keys. We are getting different stories.” In custody are William Weist, 31, Shane Smith, 24, Zachary Hallman, 19, and Earlene Parker, 27. Upon apprehension, two of the men told officers their name was Tesla, and the woman said she was given the car by a man named Tesla. “They didn’t even know Tesla was the name of the car,” Keller said. Police were called at about 1 a.m. Friday to the Tesla dealership, at 2312 S. State St., after reports it had been burglarized. “They were actually there when one of the cars drove by, and one of the troopers got in behind that car,” Keller said. “It stopped because the battery failed. We were able to take that one into custody.” Teslas are high-end electric cars that typically cost between $78,000 and $140,000. “One pulled up behind, and he also had a Tesla with no license plate, and said he felt really bad about having it, so we recovered that one,” Keller said.
