The man was airlifted to hospital after being knocked down on the A177 between Bowburn and Shincliffe on Friday morning. The pensioner, who has not been named, sadly passed away later in the afternoon at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Both the cyclist and the blue Tesla Model S 90D electric car were travelling south on the A177 when the collision occurred. Police were called to the scene at around 9.20am and closed the road, while the Great North Air Ambulance were requested. The road remained closed until almost 2pm while investigations took place and the scene was cleared. A spokesperson for the Great North Air Ambulance Service said: “We were called at about 9.10am this morning to Shincliffe with reports of a male cyclist injured in a collision with a car. “Our doctor and paramedic treated him at the scene and he was flown to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.” Durham Constabulary would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision.
