Volkswagen is diving deep into its historic catalog for retired models that could be revived as modern electric vehicles. Brand chief Herbert Diess suggests the World War II-era Kübelwagen, a rugged rear-wheel-drive convertible designed for military use, is among the iconic designs that could be brought back on the Modular Electric Toolkit (MEB) platform architecture. "This Thing is a nice car," Diess told Car and Driver. "Then there are all the buggies, the kit cars. We have the bus. We have the various derivatives of the bus." The company has already promised to bring back the Microbus, as previewed by the ID Buzz concept. The latest executive comments suggest VW leadership is unenthusiastic about carrying forward the Beetle as an electric car, though a final decision hasn't been made yet.
