Hello David,
I now have been using the NEMA L6-30 for 40 years now on a 50 amp circuit. I use a large heavy duty Denial Wood head which is all nylon water proof industrial duty. Most of your commercial and industrial duty plugs and connector have a continuous service factor of 125 percent. There fore a 30 amp receptacle with large brass back feed connectors will maintain 37.5 amp continuous duty. Turning up the PFC charger to 50 amps will momentary surge the DC ampere to 50 amps and the AC ampere to about 40 amps. I with a minute the AC ampere will reduce to about 35 amps. I install a meter indication panel on the main AC input line to indicate the AC ampere, AC voltage and DC output lines from the charger to read the DC ampere and DC voltage. This heavy duty 30 amp receptacle and plug is design to take a 4-wire No. 6 AWG stranded copper cable that is about 1 inch in diameter. It has about 1/4 inch large brass set screws that presses a brass plate against the wire to another brass plate. This receptacle is actually call a connector which is install in a Power Anderson housing with a weather proof swing cover. The connector and plug can be used without the housing, and can lay in a puddle of water with no effects. I bought this Power Anderson housing over 30 years ago. Normally use on aircraft for a ground power start up unit. I know what the code says. What is the actual sustained current carrying ability of the NEMA L6-30 plug/sockets? Just like a NEMA 5-15 can handle 20A (16A sustained) since the pins are physically the same as on a NEMA 5-20 are the L6-30 conductors large enough to handle a 50A circuit with 40A max continuous current? I want to use the L6-30 for the connectors for the various plug adapters for a portable EVSE I want to build but don't want to use a different plug because I already have the adaptors from another EVSE.
