Because the (dead) former jstraubel.com site may attach malware to your pc, I pulled down the text and images and created generic (safer) versions of JB's former pages: http://brucedp.neocities.org/jstraubel/ On that page I list several pages I have cleaned up so as to archive them: http://brucedp.neocities.org/jstraubel/jstraubel-evproject.html JB's 914 EV [EV history: (I checked the nabble archive for what I previously posted about the first time I encountered/met JB & his 944 EV while using his pusher gen1 but it has been wiped out. So old-evdl'rs please forgive the repeat ... ) Years ago as a hp CE, I was returning server parts to one of hp's local parts-warehouses. I parked the hp company ice car assigned to me (I had to keep it and myself immaculate as customers would come out to see what their $M contract was paying for), along the street across from the Mt. View, CA Costco (way back before Costco ripped out their EVSE) https://goo.gl/maps/oug91nBLBw32 The above street view does not show the warehouse (it was ripped out for the shopping center you see to the left) but SSL (Loral, to the right) is still there. It was along that street as I got out to unload all the parts I had earlier signed out for (I had already done several jobs in early morning hours, and I had to return and restock for the next ton of calls that was being dumped in my queue ("Lets give it to Bruce, he'll do all calls that no one else wants to do ..."). So, it was just another 24hr/365 day, and my energy level was sagging as I knew I had only finished half of this long day ahead of me ... But with my back to the approaching traffic racing by as I began to get the parts out the back of my company ice, I heard a sound coming ... a familiar sound that likely none of my fellow CEs would even know it was ... it was the silence of tires rolling on road with the slight light whistle of an EV controller ... (that is an EV!). I could not know for sure, so I turned to look, but it had already whizzed-by my parked company ice. But there was another sound that followed directly behind it ... that of an ice using the smallish VW bug muffler and tailpipes ... (those have a specific ping sound to them). As I looked down the street seeing the rear of a Porsche, but also something being towed behind it. I perked up immediately because, I knew that Porsche's sound was of an EV. I slammed the rear company ice door, and jumped in to follow them (returning parts, and the pager loading more calls/work on me could wait a few minutes while I checked this out). As I waded through traffic to catch up to the Porsche, I really needed to see more so I could understand what I had heard. I got up to a car length behind it, I could tell the 944 Porsche was an EV, as it had no tailpipe, and the rear pack of optima batteries could be seen mounted low. But what in the heck was that 'thing' it was towing. It was a trailer of some kind, perhaps a genset to charge the pack(?) ... It looked like someone had taken a chainsaw to a VW Bug leaving only the rear wheels and its engine. So, it was an EV and a VW I heard. As the light turned green I now had a different approach. I did not want to tailgate this guy so as not to scare him. So, I backed off by a couple of car lengths, but still followed him. I did not know how far he was going, but hoped after a few miles he would be stopping so I could talk to him. My luck was good that day as the driver finally stopped when he pulled into what looked like his driveway. I parked along the street, and got out with my camera. I approached him gently as I did not want my following him nor my large physical size to make him apprehensive. As you can see by the first picture I took http://brucedp.neocities.org/jstraubel/jstraubel-pusher-v1-3.jpg (he got out of his 944 EV with a 'What does this guy want?' body language). I used my customer skills to communicate to him I was no threat (calming any fears/concerns he had), introduced myself, and asked to talk to him about what he was driving. He gave me a couple of minutes of his time to ask my EV questions and explain what he was doing. He told his name was JB, he knew of Otmar, ... and I asked him, "Why a VW Bug?" He said they were cheap (especially those that were crashed and only the rear was usable). Note: JB's pusher (gen1) was later sold & painted to change from primer-grey to red ... http://insideevs.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/i-miev-pusher-trailer-via-matt-stevens.jpg http://insideevs.com/explained-mitsubishi-miev-range-extender-story/ Later, I ended a chat with me suggesting to him that he consider another pusher version (gen2, now that he knew his gen1 concept works), but use a VW Golf with an automatic transmission, and a diesel engine so it could run a cleaner fuel (bio-diesel, cng, lpg, etc.). I left his home, and headed back to resume my 24hr work day, but had an EV-grin experience that would last for weeks. Too bad I could not share that experience with my fellow CEs. At that time, they were all ice-heads that had no interest in EVs, cleaner alt-fuels, saving the planet, etc. ] (Back to JB's 914 EV) His 944 EV's twin motors were belted together. This was back before Siamese motors http://forums.aeva.asn.au/forums/uploads/293/DSCN2457.jpg became available/popular. His 914 EV had no regen, so on trips he used the EV to get the pusher http://brucedp.neocities.org/jstraubel/jstraubel-evpusher-v1.html (gen1, a VW Bug butt) up to speed, and then engaged the pusher on the highway. His short agm optima pack range could now let him drive down to San Luis Obsipo (almost to LA-CA) where he had CalPoly friends he wanted hang out with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Polytechnic_State_University http://evec.calpoly.edu/projects.html http://brucedp.neocities.org/jstraubel/jstraubel-evpusher-v2.html shows JB's pusher gen2 effort. I also added some other links http://www.evalbum.com/223 JB's 914 EV on evalbum.com And the Mr Sharkey page, I also cloned for archive use, as well as a link to other EV pushers on EValbum.com Enjoy ...
