I regularly use LeafSpy to monitor the battery in my Nissan Leafs.
All needed is an ELM327 OBD2 to Bluetooth or WiFi converter,
the LeafSpy is an app on phone/tablet that connect to the OBD2 via the
Bluetooth or WiFi interface.
LeafSpy Pro can also access the normal vehicle information such as the
tire pressure or the settings for unlocking doors and it can even
display how much of the braking force is contributed by regen braking or
friction braking my using the information from the intelligent braking
computer.
But the major function remains the display of the state of charge and
the balance between the 96 cells in the pack and where the balancing is
activated.
I am going to make a small display that essentially uses the same
communication via the CAN bus to the BMS (Battery Management System) to
display the information about the Leaf battery pack after I have
installed it into my US Electricar truck. The main reason to create a
separate embedded unit is that I can use the info from the pack to
protect it from overcharge and under-discharge by warning the driver and
in an emergency, disable the charger or inverter to protect the battery
pack.

CAN bus is the communication that makes a modern car work - especially
an EV. Everything, from control of lights up to the transfer of
accelerator position to motor control is transported over CAN bus.

obd1 & 2 are all about emissions monitoring and reportage.

I would be interested to know if obd2 scanners are useful at all on EVs.
Don't know, sort of doubt it. There is a guy Rick Sapienza at the NC
Clean
Energy Technology Center who might know or know who knows
