I used a stethoscope for this many years ago.  

Now that I think about it, it may have been an improvised stethoscope, made 
with a bit of rubber tubing and a small funnel. 

Another method might be to reverse your vac pump and pressurize the system, 
then apply soap solution and look for bubbles.  I haven't tried this, 
however.
