I've changed my mind about such projects as John Waylands Insight & Otmars
stretch.  I've been heavily influenced by the World Solar Challenge and The
Tesla Cruiser Class specifically.  Efficiency is key.  Why carry around all
that weight when a sub 1000 pound 4 passenger vehicle with 400 to 700 mile
range can be engineered.  A 15 kw pack and 1.5kw solar array will take you very
far and if you don't go much more than 200 miles a day no need to plug
in...unless you want to give back to the grid. You will also get 1hour charging
time with a 14.4 charger which is the upper limit of level 2 charging. So the
key is Monocoque construction so using old steel cars is maybe not efficient
enough.  A project that both John Wayland and Otmar might be interested in is
finding an old Ultravan.  This is a 22 foot motor home that weighed 3000 pounds
dry.  These were produced in the 60's and 70's by aircraft engineers.  So at
3000 pounds this is less than the weight of a Nissan Leaf...These can be found
for far less than a Tesla.  So you could have a roomy vehicle arguably more
roomy than Otmar's stretch Tesla/Vanogon idea and far less costly as a wrecked
Leaf is almost zero in cost.  So you could put together a 60-100  mile range
motor home with a 3.5kw solar array that would charge fully in 10 hours and up
to 95% in 45 minutes.  Yes not as convenient as the Tesla but I bet Otmar could
use the 3.3kw charger from a 2012 Leaf to use with the solar array and go to
his charger friends for some extremely fast charging solutions.  But with the
Chademo why bother.  I hope I've given John and Otmar some ideas and EVeryone
else.  Efficiency.  Not brute battery weight.

Ultravan looks promising.
