The 28-year-old Chinese national, surnamed Yang, was pronounced dead at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital shortly after being transferred there from Hengchun Tourism Hospital. According to a police investigation, Yang was driving the electric scooter with her boyfriend in back from Sheding Nature Park down toward Kenting when the accident occurred. As Yang's scooter was coming around a corner on the steep mountain road, she was unable to brake in time and ending up crashing into a roadside drainage, police said. She suffered a brain hemorrhage and showed no vital signs as she was being rushed to Hengchun Tourism Hospital. But she regained vital signs briefly after receiving emergency care, and was transferred to Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for further treatment. Yang's 29-year-old boyfriend surnamed Li, who was riding on the back of the vehicle, was thrown off the scooter and suffered minor bruises to his head, police said. He was also sent to the Kaohsiung hospital. Yang's death was the first fatality related to electric scooter use in the Kenting area, a beach resort in southern Taiwan popular among local and foreign visitors. Electric scooter rentals in the area are popular with visitors from China, Hong Kong and Macao, especially because the vehicles can be rented without a driver's license. According to police, the accident involving Yang and Li was the latest in a string of electric scooter accidents in the Kenting area resulting in injuries recently, police said. There have been three such accidents in the area this month in addition to 28 last year, police said. The most dangerous stretch of road is Provincial Highway 26 near Taiwan's southernmost point of Eluanbi, police noted. Kenting National Park Headquarters is also considering posting warning signs along the road connecting Sheding Park in the hills overlooking Kenting to Sail Rock along the coast, police said.
