SEOUL, Feb. 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's top automaker Hyundai Motor Co.
said Thursday that it will launch the Ioniq Electric, a pure electric
vehicle model based on its own production platform, in June.

The Ioniq is the name of an eco-friendly vehicle model recently launched by
the automaker. Hyundai Motor unveiled its hybrid model first last month with
a plan to launch pure electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in
phases.

Equipped with a motor that can produce up to 120 horsepower, the Ioniq
Electric can travel more than 169 kilometers on a single battery charge, the
longest among electric cars being sold in Korea. It can also accelerate to
165 kph, ensuring relatively powerful driving performance, the company said.

The Ioniq Electric is 4,470 mm long, 1,820 mm wide and 1,450 mm high, with
its wheelbase measuring 2,700 mm.

Hyundai Motor set its prices in the 40 million won (US$32,706) range, but it
added that customers can benefit from nearly 20 million won in central and
regional government subsidies that will increase its price merits.

Hyundai Motor aims to sell 4,000 units of the Ioniq Electric this year.

Hyundai to Release New Electric Car in June
Feb. 19, 2016

Hyundai will in June launch an electric version of the Ioniq, its first
fully-dedicated eco-friendly hybrid car, which hit the market here last
month.

The electric model can travel for up to 169 km on a single charge, the
farthest among electric vehicles available here. The record was previously
held by Kia's Soul EV, with a range of 148 km.

The new Ioniq will cost around W400 million, a little more than GM's Spark
(W39.9 million) but cheaper than Renault Samsung's SM3 EV (W41.9 million)
and BMW's i3 (W57.1 million) (US$1=W1,230).

With a government subsidy of W12 million provided for any purchase of an
electric vehicle, consumers can technically purchase the car for less than
W30 million.

As the battery runs down, drivers can keep track of the maximum remaining
travel distance. The vehicle also warns the driver if there is no charging
station within range. Hyundai aims to sell 4,000 units of the new model this
year.
