Charge.net.nz spokeperson Nick Smith says this is the fourth of 12 fast charging stations they're installing around the country before mid-March. They plan to install 100 by the end of 2019 and have a station every 80km. It takes around 20 minutes and $10 to completely charge your car. They chose Kawakawa with the intent of opening up a Northland tourist route so visiting electric-vehicle drivers can see the sights in keeping with their sustainable principles. The charge stations use 100 per cent carbon-free electricity. There are 958 registered electric vehicles including hybrids in New Zealand. Smith says Northland has championed the movement. "Electric vehicles are a good thing for our country economically and environmentally. "We hope the growth will continue exponentially." An entry level electric car costs around $20,000. Smith estimates they cost around one-third of the price to run as a regular car. It costs around $6 for an electric car to travel 100km as opposed to $18 for a petrol-fuelled car. They're not just for rich people - they make sense environmentally, financially and socially too, he says.
