While our favorite game isn't new, the way we play it will certainly be unique come spring when Silver Lake Golf Course becomes the first New York City golf course to introduce the use of GolfBoards. We're talking about the newest innovation to getting around the course and that is Golfboard which brings modern technology to our traditional game. We had the pleasure of witnessing a demonstration of the newest gold vehicle during a visit to Silver Lake prior to the snowstorm when Ken O'Connell, director of sales for the GolfBoard Company, brought along two samples and plenty of information. Doug Johnstone of the Lake course saw the vehicle at the PGA Golf Show where it was named "Best Product of the Year" in 2014 and asked for the demo. The easy-to-ride electric board has four wheels, is approximately three inches from the ground and is controlled by the golfer with a thumb throttle and steered with body motion just as you would a surf board. And why not? The GolfBoard is a spin-off by the world's greatest surfer -- Laird Hamilton. Hamilton and his staff have successfully produced many types of "boards" and spent more than two years perfecting the GolfBoard. "It's the most efficient way to surf the earth," said Connelly as he drove the fairways and hills of the Lake course accompanied by Lake general manager John Strandberg as well as Johnstone himself. The four-wheel drive electric GolfBoard is built using the insight and experience from a diverse team of golf industry professionals as well as electric vehicle experts. The Golfboard has many advantages including four-inch wide turf tires allowing you to go in many more places than being limited to cart paths. It's light in weight and easy to store and has a high efficiency brushed motor with Li-Ion battery from the same manufacturer as BMW. More advantages: * Since GolfBoard travels at 10-12 mph, it will greatly reduce the time of play with golfers driving directly to their own ball eliminating the back and forth driving of a golf cart. * Riding alone allows for the enjoyment of surfing the fairways and the fresh air en route to your next shot. * There's a lot to be said for riding alone where you can avoid small talk, griping or bragging by another player. As for its safety, O'Connell tells us that 210,000 rounds have been played in the state of Oregon without a single injury resulting from the use of GolfBoards. However, all players must be qualified and certified prior to operating the newest in golf transportation.
