DC fast charging provides a rapid recharge of battery electric vehicles, generally in less than 30 minutes. Interest in the factors that influence the adoption of electric vehicle technology has grown in Georgia following the Legislature’s decision to eliminate a $5,000 tax credit and impose a $200 per year registration fees. EV sales have plummeted 90 percent since last June, when the law took effect. HYOSUB SHIN / [email protected] ] A Georgia lawmaker wants the state to reinstate tax credits for the purchase of electric vehicles, less than a year after a previous program ended. Rep. Margaret Kaiser, D-Atlanta [ http://legislativenavigator.myajc.com/#bills/HB/877 ], this week filed House Bill 877 [ http://legislativenavigator.myajc.com/#members/145 ], which would impose smaller credits for the purchase of plug-in vehicles. The tax credits would expire for good on Dec. 31, 2019. Georgia had been a national leader in the sales of electric vehicles, thanks in large part to a $5,000 tax credit. But lawmakers last year eliminated the program and imposed an annual $200 registration fee on cars like the Nissan Leaf. Since then, sales here have plummeted. Kaiser would offer up to a $3,000 tax credit for plug-in cars through 2017, and $2000 through 2019. The bill comes as advocates urge lawmakers [ http://commuting.blog.ajc.com/2016/01/28/alliance-presses-lawmakers-to-study-electric-vehicle-benefits/ ] to study ways to encourage the purchase of electric and other alternatively fueled vehicles.
