Electric vehicles are _less_ noisy to wildlife,
but not silent in their hearing range.
While the low frequency noises from the engine
and exhaust are eliminated, the high-pitched
electronic noise can be quite loud to wildlife
(and those of us that can hear ~17 kHz and
above.) The controller switching frequency of is
above the typical person's threshold of hearing,
but my cats would greet me in the driveway every
evening that I would come home from work in my
EV. They could hear me coming a block away. My
wife can definitely hear the controller in our Prius and also in our Leaf.

(Hunter's e-ATV) ] All-electric vehicles reduce
pressure on deer All-terrain vehicles are among
the most versatile tools deer hunters can have.
From discing to hauling stands and spreading
seed and fertilizer they can do itt all. But
when deer season starts, more and more camps are
silencing their ATVs. "We have two spots where
we can drive a four-wheeler," David Cuevas of
Madison said of his Madison County hunting club.
"The rest of it is all-electric. "We have 12
members and 10 have electric carts. Most of them
are Polaris EVs and Bad Boy Buggies." Cuevas
explained that because of the camp's size and
where access roads are located, noise from ATV
traffic could be heard throughout the camp and
put unwanted stress on their deer. "We have
about 1,200 acres and 12 members and to get
anywhere, you have to go through the middle of
it," Cuevas said. "Our four-wheelers were making
so much noise and went right through the middle
of camp. So, we decided to go all-electric."
With fewer ATVs on the property, the noise level
might be acceptable, but club president Tommy
Kendall said simple economics pushed the volume
too high. "I guess, primarily, it's the price of
leased land," Kendall, of Madison, said. "It's
gotten so expensive now. "You've got to increase
the number of hunters to afford it.
Four-wheelers on 1,200 acres you can hear them
aalmost all the way across the property. I just
decided to go electric. These aren't like your
typical golf cars. These are four-wheel drive."
The impact on the deer was immediately
noticeable to the camp members. "We instantly
saw a difference," Kendall said. "We can drive
up to a food plot and see four or five deer. "We
never, ever had that happen before. It's really
worked well. There's no doubt, it's the way to
do it." While the decision to use electric
vehicles during deer season has worked for their
camp, ATV's still have their place for jobs
during the remainder of the year. "During the
off-season, we'll allow four-wheelers," Kendall
said. "During deer season, they're off limits."
According to Stewart Conway, owner of Gulf
States Golf Cars in Ridgeland, more camps have
followed the same path. "I've certainly seen a
shift from gas cars to electric for hunting,"
Conway said. "I've talked to a lot of people
who've said their camps require electric
vehicles. It's becoming much more common." Some
hunters associate battery-powered vehicles with
poor performance and limited range, but
according to Conway, that's not really the case.
He said cars he customizes can travel at speeds
around 20 miles per hour and newer battery
technology allows them to go about 25 miles
between charges, depending on the terrain and
load. "I've never had anyone come back and say,
'It doesn't go as far as I need,'" Conway said.
