The company has already brought its self-driving Soul EV to Beatty, Nevada, to begin trials for the Advanced Driver Assistance System, developed with help from affiliate Hyundai. "Thanks to this license we will be able to accelerate the testing of our new autonomous driving technologies that are currently in the early stages of development, with particular emphasis on our alternative powertrain vehicles," said Hyundai Motor Group's VP of advanced research, Tae-Won Lim. Hyundai-Kia plans has promised to invest $2 billion toward ADAS development by 2018, enabling the companies to hire more engineers and focus on a wider range of semi- and fully-autonomous features. The first capabilities expected to see production include traffic-jam assist and highway autonomous driving, while urban autonomous driving and autonomous valet parking will arrive further down the road. The Korean automakers are planning to launch partially-autonomous technologies by 2020, a decade ahead of their first expected fully-autonomous vehicles.
