Conservative MP Amber Rudd voices fears over plug-in vehicles as Cabinet row
breaks out

BRITAIN’S electric car revolution could trigger blackouts by overloading our
power network, senior Tories fear.

A Cabinet row has broken out over the plug-in motors.

Eco-loving ministers at the Environment and Transport departments say
greener roads with millions of the electric vehicles is vital for clean air.

But the Department of Energy and Climate Change fear we don’t have enough
power for them.

Energy Secretary Amber Rudd is so worried she asked the Cabinet Office to
referee the dispute.

A source said: “Environment and transport ministers want millions more
electric cars on the streets.

“But when Amber saw these plans her reaction was ‘f***, f***, f***’ because
she is really worried we don’t have enough power.

“Supplies are stretched already so imagine if everyone charges their cars at
the same time.

“She called in Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Letwin but he said the real
issue is delivering power to homes — which is not governmental
responsibility.”

The Tories’ Election manifesto set out a vision for “almost every car and
van to be zero emission by 2020” and £500million has been pledged to make it
happen.

That would mean replacing 30 million cars and four million vans.

Such an increase would require vast amounts of extra power — there are
currently only 45,000 electric cars.
