Combine a copious annual snowfall with a long steep driveway and you'll
understand why I've got such a monster of a snow blower sitting in my garage
(30 inches wide, 24 inches high, 8 horsepower engine). I'd like to go
electric, but I've never seen an electric snow blower that large. Has
anyone ever converted a gasoline snow blower to electric? My biggest areas
of uncertainty up front are motor sizing and motor control.

I've got a GE Electrak model E-10 electric garden tractor. It has *plenty* of power for snow plowing and snow blowing. I only have the plow blade, but I've seen the snow blower attachment for it. If you can find one, it should be more than enough for your driveway.

Most Electrak models have six 6v golf cart batteries for power. That's a lot of weight, which is just what you need for traction. I don't know what the rated horsepower of the motors, but they are un-stall-able. You run out of traction before you run out of push. You've seen my driveway, and it can push a car up the hill.

More info on the Electraks is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elec-Trak

Here are some on ebay, including photos of the snow blower accessory
